Life Insurance

Term life insurance covers a defined period, while whole life is designed to provide lifelong protection when required premiums are paid. Term generally costs less initially for the same death benefit; whole life includes cash value and typically costs more. The better choice depends on the job you need the policy to do.
Are you protecting income while children grow up? Covering a mortgage? Preparing for final expenses? Leaving money to someone who may always depend on you?
Those questions matter more than choosing a product because a friend owns it or a video recommends it.
| Question | Term life | Whole life |
|---|---|---|
| How long is protection designed to last? | A specified term | A lifetime, subject to policy terms |
| Is there cash value? | Generally no | Yes, according to the contract |
| What about premiums? | Often level for the selected term | Typically fixed under the payment schedule |
| What happens later? | Coverage may end or renewal costs may increase | Coverage continues if requirements are met |
Term can fit a large coverage need with a defined timeline. For example, a parent might want protection through the years their children depend on their income. The budget question is practical: how much protection can the household comfortably maintain?
Whole life may fit a lasting death-benefit need and a budget that supports long-term premiums. Its guaranteed values and any nonguaranteed dividends should be reviewed separately. Cash value is not the same as a checking-account balance; accessing it can affect policy benefits.
It is also reasonable to compare a combination: term for larger temporary responsibilities and a smaller permanent policy for an enduring need.
Standard term generally does not return premiums. Return-of-premium products have different costs and conditions.
Some policies have conversion provisions. Check the deadline, eligible products, and premium before relying on that option.
No. A longer duration does not by itself establish fit. Compare your purpose, required benefit, and sustainable budget.
